Ruth Romero was gravely ill and placed on a ventilator to help her breathe in mid-April. Then, St. Catherine Hospital’s multidisciplinary team of respiratory, physical and occupational therapists stepped in to perform a lifesaving “proning” technique. The treatment means the patient is flipped into a prone position or flat on their belly with their chest and face down rather than on their back, at intervals, to help get more oxygen into the blood. Within days, she showed marked improvement. One month later, she took her first steps. On May 28, Ruth went home.
