The St.Vincent Trauma Center has created a campaign designed to educate our community about the hazards associated with texting while driving, Drive Now / Text Later. The goal is not only to bring a powerful message to teens and parents about this growing problem, but also to decrease the amount of trauma-related injuries due to distracted driving in Indiana.

St.Vincent Carmel Hospital sponsored this year’s Westfield Safety Festival. The hospital provided health education and screenings. Several thousand local families attended the festival and learned about home and personal safety issues. One safety demonstration received special attention from attendees.
Hospital nurse and American Heart Association coordinator, Joyce Jobs, demonstrated CPR techniques for the crowd. Rather than simply stating the information at a booth, Jobs got creative.
The American Heart Association recommends chest compressions performed “at least 100 times per minute and at least 2 inches deep” to best assist blood circulation in a person whose heart has stopped pumping blood. The song “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees has a musical rhythm of 100 beats per minute, and is an easy way to remember how fast to compress the chest. Also, the song title is so appropriate!
Two Westfield firefighters, Don Anderson and John Barrett, and event some mascots helped get the crowd into it with a special dance.

Richard Marsh, a 73-year-old, former St.Vincent Heart Center of Indiana patient participated in a challenge at an Indiana Ice game. He was asked to hit a 3 inch diameter puck 175 feet into a hole just over 3 inches wide.
“I had people coming down out of the stands saying I’ve been coming here 30 years and nobody’s ever made that shot,” he said.
But as soon as the celebrating began so did the controversy. The insurance company underwriting the contest disqualified Marsh for making the shot from in front of the designated line. He said he never knew he had to be behind it.
In response to outrage from fans, the Indiana Ice will donate an undisclosed amount of money to St.Vincent Heart Center and the American Heart Association anyway.
“We are doing this because it was a close call and a generous gesture by a loyal fan. Indiana Ice thanks our fan base for supporting the team,” the team said.
Marsh said he holds no hard feelings, he’s happy things will work out. His connection to St. Vincent is personal. Four years ago, doctors there saved his life with double bypass surgery. He said he’s just thankful for the chance to give back.

Joey Pegaja discovered he had a gift at the age of 10, when his friends would ask him to whistle a song for them. At that young age, the native of the Southeastern African nation of Malawi knew some simple tunes and popular songs, but his musical tastes matured when he came to the United States and began his training as a patient care tech.
Joey came to the United States in 1997 and lived in South Bend and Fort Wayne before coming to Indianapolis in 2005 where he worked for a patient care agency that covered St.Vincent Seton Specialty Hospital.
Joey’s whistling talent has touched lives on two continents. And our patients appreciate his warm smile and gentle melodies.
St.Vincent Seton Specialty Hospital is a long-term acute care facility, with two convenient locations in Indianapolis and Lafayette. Both facilities serve medically complex inpatients who require extended hospital stays of 25 days or more. In Indianapolis, the location encompasses a 66,000-square-foot hospital with 74 beds. In Lafayette, the location includes 30 beds.
