Bill Ritter shared that he has been diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease and would be stepping away from his longtime role as an anchor at Eyewitness News. “After a series of tests, my doctors have told me I have Alzheimer’s,” Ritter said during the June 12 ABC 7 NY newscast. “This is called ‘early stage’ Alzheimer’s, and they say the treatments I’m getting are keeping it at bay, at least for now.” The veteran journalist explained that after turning 75, he had already begun scaling back his workload in hopes of spending more time with his family. Although he stepped away from the anchor desk, Ritter revealed that he planned to remain involved with ABC 7 by mentoring younger journalists and using his platform to help raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease.
