“Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?” by Mark Spence

Why do bad things happen to good people? The biblical answer is there are no “good” people. In Mark 10:18, Jesus said that only God is good. Because God is good, He will see to it that justice is done on the Day of Judgment. If He gave each of us justice right now, every one of us would end up in a terrible place called Hell, and we would deserve it. God is the standard of righteousness, and all of us have fallen short of that standard, so there really aren’t “good” people that “bad” things happen to.

A better question is this: “Why does God allow good things to happen to bad people?” With reasons known only to God, He demonstrated his own love for us in that “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” In spite of our evil, wicked, sinful nature, God still loves us. He loved us enough to die to take the penalty for our sins when He was crucified on the cross.

Often things happen to us that we simply cannot understand. Instead of doubting God’s goodness in times of suffering, we should trust Him. We should echo the words of Job: “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him.” The book of Job shows us that God is trustworthy, even when we don’t understand the suffering around us.

Why do bad things happen to good people? That only happened once…and He volunteered.

“Is It Wrong to Judge?” by Mark Spence

Relativism is the philosophical position that all points of view are equally valid, and that all truth is left up to the individual to define. This means that all moral positions, all religious systems, and all political movements are truths that are relative to the individual. In other words, there are no right or wrong answers… to anything!

It’s easy to recognize relativism because most of its statements sound intellectual, but they are simply ridiculous and self-refuting. They go something like this:

“You can’t know anything for sure.”
“You shouldn’t judge.”
“Nobody’s right.”
“You can’t know anything.”
“What’s true for you isn’t true for me.”

Now the easiest way to refute statements like these is to simply turn them back around.
“You can’t know anything for sure.” Are you sure of that? Are you sure you can’t know anything for sure?

“You shouldn’t judge.” Is that your judgment? And if you shouldn’t judge, then why are you judging my judgment?

“Nobody’s right.” Are you right? Are you right that nobody’s right? And if you are right, then you’re wrong about nobody being right.

“You can’t know anything.” Do you know that? Do you know that you can’t know anything?

“What’s true for you isn’t true for me.” Well, that’s true. And what is true for me is that you’re wrong.

So the next time you’re confronted with that relativity nonsense, just turn it around. Question their logic and help them to realize that their point of view is just plain silly.
