Sometimes we wonder if God has forgotten us. But God has promised us that He “will prepare the way before [us], if it so be that [we] shall keep [His] commandments” (1 Nephi 17:13). This does not mean that we will go throughout our lives without roadblocks. Rather, it means that God will provide us with the means to overcome them, as long as we are faithful and obedient to Him.
Nephi and his family relied on the Liahona to help guide them in the wilderness. However, the Liahona only worked when Lehi’s family was righteous and kept the commandments of God. When Nephi’s bow broke and the family went without food, they began to murmur against the Lord and lose faith in His promises. Nephi did not give up. He made a new bow and asked his father where he should hunt. Lehi humbled himself and prayed for guidance. Nephi followed the Liahona and was able to find food for his family. They repented of their murmuring and thanked the Lord for His mercy and help.
These stories teach us that God will never abandon us, but we must also choose to never abandon Him.

Sariah, alone in the desert with Lehi, begins to fear that her sons are lost to them. Meanwhile, Laman, Lemuel, Sam, and Nephi gather up the riches their father left behind and attempt to buy the records from Laban, but Laban steals their wealth and attempts to kill Lehi’s sons. Despite their best efforts to obey both their father and God, Lehi’s sons seem to face failure wherever they turn. Things are not much better for their parents.
Based on 1 Nephi 3:14–27:
14 But Laman fled out of his presence, and told the things which Laban had done, unto us. And we began to be exceedingly sorrowful, and my brethren were about to return unto my father in the wilderness.
15 But behold I said unto them that: As the Lord liveth, and as we live, we will not go down unto our father in the wilderness until we have accomplished the thing which the Lord hath commanded us.
16 Wherefore, let us be faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord; therefore let us go down to the land of our father’s inheritance, for behold he left gold and silver, and all manner of riches. And all this he hath done because of the commandments of the Lord.
17 For he knew that Jerusalem must be destroyed, because of the wickedness of the people. 18 For behold, they have rejected the words of the prophets. Wherefore, if my father should dwell in the land after he hath been commanded to flee out of the land, behold, he would also perish. Wherefore, it must needs be that he flee out of the land.
19 And behold, it is wisdom in God that we should obtain these records, that we may preserve unto our children the language of our fathers;
20 And also that we may preserve unto them the words which have been spoken by the mouth of all the holy prophets, which have been delivered unto them by the Spirit and power of God, since the world began, even down unto this present time.
21 And it came to pass that after this manner of language did I persuade my brethren, that they might be faithful in keeping the commandments of God.
22 And it came to pass that we went down to the land of our inheritance, and we did gather together our gold, and our silver, and our precious things.
23 And after we had gathered these things together, we went up again unto the house of Laban.
24 And it came to pass that we went in unto Laban, and desired him that he would give unto us the records which were engraven upon the plates of brass, for which we would give unto him our gold, and our silver, and all our precious things.
25 And it came to pass that when Laban saw our property, and that it was exceedingly great, he did lust after it, insomuch that he thrust us out, and sent his servants to slay us, that he might obtain our property.
26 And it came to pass that we did flee before the servants of Laban, and we were obliged to leave behind our property, and it fell into the hands of Laban.
27 And it came to pass that we fled into the wilderness, and the servants of Laban did not overtake us, and we hid ourselves in the cavity of a rock.

Lehi’s vision of the tree of life is a powerful parable about enduring to the end.
In 1 Nephi 8, Lehi experiences a vision that unveils the iron rod guiding his family to the tree of life. The iron rod becomes a powerful symbol of God’s word, while the tree of life embodies the boundless love of God.
Lehi’s vision also reveals a crucial truth: only those who steadfastly cling to the word of God will find salvation amidst the enveloping mists of darkness.
In this story, the righteous individuals show resilience as they “press their way forward, continually holding fast to the rod of iron, until they came forth and fell down and partook of the fruit of the tree” (1 Nephi 8:30).
Much like the inspiring characters in this story, we can navigate the challenges of temptation and confusion that surround us. By grasping onto God’s word, heeding the counsel of His prophets, and directing our thoughts toward the Savior, we have the power to press forward and partake of the blessings that await us.
We are each part of a divine plan crafted by a loving Creator. God’s plan isn’t just about existence; it’s about growth, redemption, and eternal joy.
Jacob, a prophet from the Book of Mormon, exclaimed, “O how great the plan of our God!” (2 Nephi 9:13) And indeed, it is great beyond measure. This plan encompasses the journey of our spirits from premortality through mortality and into the eternities.
In God’s plan, there’s room for us to learn, to stumble, and to rise again. He provided a way for us to cleanse our souls, to find redemption, and to experience the profound joy of living in accordance with His perfect gospel.
“In 1 Nephi 3:7, it says, ‘I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.’
“Nephi doesn’t say, ‘I will go and think about it’; he says, ‘I will go DO!’ Our acting in faith precedes testimony of a certain thing. The action of doing something in faith will give us a testimony of that thing, and so I challenge you to GO and DO.” —Jackson
“A few years ago, I was involved in a head-on collision with a drunk driver. This accident left me paralyzed from the waist down, and I had to have both of my legs amputated above the knee.
“One of my favorite scriptures in the Book of Mormon is Alma 36:3. This explains that if you put your trust in the Lord, then you will be supported in your trials. I have been through a lot, but I have felt the love of my Savior Jesus Christ because I have put my trust in Him, in His timing, and in His plan, because His plan is perfect for all of us, and we are exactly where He wants us to be, even if we may feel lost.
“I have truly felt supported in everything that I’ve gone through because I’ve put my trust in God, and I know that all of you can too!” —Sarah
Even in tumultuous times, we can find hope in Jesus Christ.
Moroni, the last prophet in the Book of Mormon, witnessed the destruction of his nation. While this was a dark time for Moroni, he was reminded that hope and light would come to God’s children in the latter days.
That light and hope comes from Jesus Christ.
As you read the Book of Mormon, you can learn of Jesus Christ and His teachings. You can grow closer to Him, feel of His love for you, and receive answers to your prayers as you ask in faith.
How has Jesus Christ provided hope and light in your life?
