The earth was filled with violence. Giants with six fingers took what they wanted, and the city of Cain burned its fires day and night — and one old farmer walked against the crowd with a bronze axe on his shoulder, because God had told him to build. For years they laughed at the ark in the middle of a dry plain. Then the animals came on their own, the door rose with no hand on it, and the fountains of the great deep burst open.

“And the LORD shut him in. — Genesis 7:16”
The Chronicles of Noah is a full-length biblical film about the man who found grace in the eyes of the Lord when the whole earth had become corrupt — told from the world before the flood to the bow in the cloud. It follows Noah, his wife Emzara, his sons Shem, Ham and Japheth and their wives, from the night God spoke to him on a plain ruled by the Nephilim, the mighty men of old, through the years of cutting gopher wood and boiling pitch while the city came out to mock, to the day his grandfather Methuselah was laid in the ground and the seven days began. It stays inside the ark, where the Bible goes quiet: the darkness under the light-opening a cubit below the roof, the rain on the deck for forty days, the knocking on the door that no one inside could open, the hundred and fifty days when even Noah’s sons asked if God had forgotten them, the raven that went to and fro, and the dove that came back in the evening with a freshly plucked olive leaf. It draws on Genesis 6 to 9, on 1 Peter, 2 Peter, Hebrews 11 and the words of Jesus in Matthew 24, and it stages every scene in the world it happened in: a black basalt city, farms of stacked fieldstone, giant red-barked forests, bronze tools and hand-spun wool, an ark of gopher wood coated with pitch inside and out, and the mountains of Ararat. If you have ever wondered what it was like to build for years while everyone laughed, why God shut the door himself, or what eight people said to each other in the dark while the whole world was under water — this is that chronicle, day by day, on the dates the Bible gives. And when the door finally opened, the first thing Noah built on the empty earth was an altar.
