Dr. Cook received his training at Boston University School of Medicine in Boston. He completed his residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. St.Vincent Carmel Hospital sponsored this year’s Westfield Safety Festival. The hospital provided health education and screenings. Several thousand local families attended the festival and learned about home and personal safety issues. One safety demonstration received special attention from attendees.
Hospital nurse and American Heart Association coordinator, Joyce Jobs, demonstrated CPR techniques for the crowd. Rather than simply stating the information at a booth, Jobs got creative.
The American Heart Association recommends chest compressions performed “at least 100 times per minute and at least 2 inches deep” to best assist blood circulation in a person whose heart has stopped pumping blood. The song “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees has a musical rhythm of 100 beats per minute, and is an easy way to remember how fast to compress the chest. Also, the song title is so appropriate!

In this one-hour presentation, Marc Gerdisch, MD, FACS, FACC, cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon with Cardiac Surgery Associates who chooses to practice at Franciscan Health, discusses how the use of new pain control methods, new sternum securing devices, and nutrition and fitness suggestions prior to surgery can come together to result in shorter hospital stays, less pain and quicker healing for patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Cycles occur naturally in nature, like the rising and setting of the sun, the cycle of the seasons, the blooming and dying of a flower, all of which repeats itself forever. Then we have our own man-made cycles, like time, daily routines, the economy, the creation and destruction of new and old inventions.
A cycle looks like an ebb and flows, back and forth, yin and yang. It’s not a loop simply going in a circle, but rather the shape of an infinity sign.
